An AllModern Music Room Makeover

In celebration alongside AllModern for their first-ever brick and mortar store, I gave this room a glow-up. We loved this room before, but now we never leave!

Full disclosure: The products linked within this post have been generously sponsored by AllModern, but I had full control over the products I chose for our home, and I’m excited to share them with you!

Why I gave this room a glow-up

I had already been a long-time fan of AllModern (and the entire Wayfair family of brands). As a Wayfair Professional shopper, I’ve sourced more home furnishings and accessories from AllModern than I can begin to recall, and my clients have always been thrilled with the end result. When I received an email about an exciting partnership opportunity with AllModern, I felt starstruck! Of course, I jumped at the chance to update this space with the right furniture and decor, and knowing from experience how quickly products ship from AllModern (plus the quality of what I’m getting), it all came together within a week! Skip to the end for product links, or stick around and read about how this super-awesome room came to be!

Where it all began

When our family moved into this house in March of 2019, it was builder-grade-boring and straight out of the nineties. When our realtor Kendra took us for that very first showing, though, I fell in love with the home’s potential. It had high ceilings (10 feet!), windows in every direction, and great bones.

The very first space we walked into upon entering the home was the formal office. It had traditional white French doors with glass panes, opening-up into a 14’ x 10’ room painted in a vibrant, saturated version of baby blue. There was beige carpeting, sateen patterned curtains mounted to the inside of the glass doors, and a dated pendant light (full of dead flies, mind you). Those east-facing windows brought in SUCH beautiful daylight, though, and that was something we didn’t have in our home at that time (that house only had north-facing windows on the main floor, with the exception of one south-facing window in the powder room).

While it took us a little more than six months to hone in on the vibe we wanted for this room, we knew we didn’t want to use it as a formal office. Our firstborn was three months old when we moved in, and we anticipated he’d soon be crawling. We wanted to have a space in our home that he could wander into without having to brave the basement stairs. A space that could be the designated fun zone—fun for our little Joe, but for the big people, too :)

My husband Jason and I have always appreciated music, dare I say more than the average person haha. He is incredibly talented on the acoustic guitar (the kind of skills where he can hear a song for the first time and play it on his guitar minutes later). He can pick up a mandolin or a banjo and hold his own, too. As for me, having been an English major, I loved dissecting the lyrics of my favorite songs and listening for figurative language and underlying meanings in songs. I also was big into dance in my younger years. Jason and I had been collecting vinyl records for a few years, and Jason had a growing string-instruments collection, so we decided to make this space “the music room.”

How it initially came together

For a long time, while we demoed and rebuilt some of the higher-priority spaces in our home, this room accumulated everything and anything. Baby toys, miscellaneous accent chairs, end tables, cleaning supplies, framed art… pretty much everything we had brought over from our first home that didn’t yet have a purpose in the new home. We’d simply shut the doors and forget about all of it.

Eventually, Joe started crawling. We sorted through the clutter, cleared out the room, and we continued the same hardwood flooring from the main areas in our home into this space. Next, we smoothed and primed the walls, and we installed a deep charcoal-colored, geometric-patterned, textured wallpaper. To make the windows POP even more against the black walls and give a bit of a modern edge, we framed the insides with stained cedar boards. Next, we painted the ceiling a coordinating shade of black/deep charcoal, which—contrary to popular belief—actually made the room feel much larger! Finally, we installed a warm, modern, wood-textured ceiling pendant, and this room was starting to feel much more like “us.”

AllModern for the WIN!

While the other sofa we put in here technically did “fit,” it wasn’t the right sofa for this space. It was a right-hand facing chaise sectional, and while squishy and cozy, it made for a sort-of awkward layout in here. The French doors (which are positioned on a diagonal) opened right into the chaise, and if we had moved the sofa any more to the right, we would have limited our ability to open and close the doors, so there was, in turn, a lot of wasted space on the right side of the room.

I was looking online for a new chaise sectional, but one with the chaise on the left-hand side, and once AllModern offered to help out with the sofa, I found the Kenji 122” left-hand sectional in Cream. It was the perfect color, perfect size, and perfect layout for this space. It’s also nice and firm, and makes for a great WFH sofa (I’m sitting on it now as I type this blog post!). Oh, and the best part: The delivery men brought it to my room of choice, assembled it, and removed any and all remnants of the packaging!

For my coffee mug to sit on, I donated our old end-table-turned-cat-scratching-post and replaced it with AllModern’s 22” Lizeth End Table. I love that the top is genuine marble, and the modern-industrial openwork metal base makes it a visually lightweight accessory that is just the opposite in stability and actual product weight.

On it sits the Gio 25.5” Table Lamp in Antique Brass (it also comes in blackened bronze, brushed nickel, and white if gold tones aren’t your thing), which brings a modern-industrial touch without breaking sight lines and adding too much visual weight to the room.

Our coffee table was a Craigslist find, and while I had the opportunity to source a new one from AllModern, I opted to find some pretty accessories. The children are still too little to understand how to keep the coffee table nice (this one has seen its fair share of scratches and dents), so I feel like it’s smart to keep it a little longer and then upgrade to a nicer one when Joe and Everleigh are past the banging-cars-and-plastic-farm-animals-on-the-coffee-table stage. ;)

For decor, I discovered the prettiest little fluted yellow vase—perfect for the upcoming summer months, and I’m sure it’ll serve us well this Fall, too! To create a visual triangle (it’s always smart to vary the heights of objects you decorate your coffee table with), I stacked some books and placed this black marble geometric object on top, then placed a small geometric candle lower and toward the middle for balance.

To ground the entire space, we replaced the charcoal vintage-style washable rug with this Sand Dollar patterned wool rug. I was pleasantly surprised to see how thick the wool pile was on this rug, and it truly helps give this room a better sense of identity—it’s modern, cool, and ready for some fun!
